The world is being turned upside down by AI and chatbots like ChatGPT. Will AI enhance society or bring it to its knees? That question will be answered at some point, but for now, we might as well use these tool to build our wealth, right? Right!
Albert Phelps, a prompt engineer at a UK-based Accenture consultancy firm, describes his role as being an “AI whisperer,” regardless of educational background, with degrees ranging from history to philosophy and English. Phelps and his colleagues typically write five different prompts and have 50 interactions with large language models like ChatGPT on a typical workday.
While freelance platforms such as PromptBase offer opportunities to earn a few dollars selling prompt-writing skills, excelling in the field can lead to big paydays. According to Mark Standen, owner of an AI, automation, and machine learning staffing business in the UK and Ireland, prompt engineering is “probably the fastest-moving IT market I’ve worked in for 25 years.”
Bloomberg reports that select individuals with expertise in AI chatbots, especially those using next-gen tech like ChatGPT, can earn a lucrative six-figure salary as “prompt engineers.” These professionals train others on using AI chatbots more effectively and earn up to $335,000 per year.
Expert prompt engineers can name their price, with salaries starting at $50,000 per year and some candidates in Standen’s company’s database looking for between $250,000 and $360,000 per year. The prompt engineering market is experiencing significant growth, but there is no way to predict whether it will burst anytime soon.
Despite concerns about job security due to AI and automation, prompt engineering offers a lucrative career path for those with the necessary skills. As companies continue to adopt AI chatbots, the demand for prompt engineers is likely to increase, providing a stable career path with room for growth and financial reward.
The skills required for prompt engineering are not necessarily limited to those with a background in computer science or engineering. Individuals with a wide range of educational backgrounds, as evidenced by Phelps, can excel in the field with the right training and experience. This provides opportunities for people to transition into the field from other industries and pursue a new and lucrative career path.
As technology continues to evolve and AI chatbots become increasingly sophisticated, the role of prompt engineers will only become more important. The ability to communicate effectively and distill complex ideas into concise prompts will be critical for creating chatbots that provide meaningful and valuable interactions with users.
