It helps to keep motivated when you have a larger purpose as your driving force. Why do you want a seat in the C-suite? Is it more money to be able to provide for your family? Is it the power to make influential decisions that significantly improve the company’s mission, profitability or culture? Having a deeper, meaningful purpose will reinforce your goals and motivate you to keep pushing forward with hard work and dedication.

Work On Your Mindset

To ensure you are in a growth mindset, practice visualization, mantras and self-affirmations. Start visualizing where you want to be, like that coveted corner office. Have mantras and self-affirmations you can tell yourself every day to reaffirm your intended goal, like “I am worthy of the promotion” and “I will have a position in the C-suite in 2024.”

Get Noticed

People say, “Dress for the job you want.” However, I would encourage you to act as if you have the job you want. Brand yourself as someone with executive leadership potential both internally and externally. Post content on LinkedIn and other social media sites relative to your industry so that you can be seen as a subject-matter expert.

At the office, offer to help co-workers. Raise your hand to give valuable input and ideas in team meetings. Volunteer for challenging assignments others are afraid to take to demonstrate your willingness to go above and beyond your title. Key decision-makers will admire your tenacity, ability to take initiative, and dedication to your field.

Put yourself in more situations where random positive encounters are possible. Often, it’s not what you know, but who you know that opens doors to opportunities. Networking is crucial for career growth. Seek mentors, coaches, sponsors and truth-tellers who can help build and guide your career. Repay the favor by adopting a protégé to take under your wing.

Ensure that your body of work speaks for itself. Demonstrate your value by delivering results and having a proven track record for success.

Be A Habitual Learner

You must grow your skills and knowledge base. Do this by taking online courses and obtaining credentials and accreditations. Attend industry-specific meetups, conferences, events and happy hours. Undergo leadership training. Become a voracious reader of information relative to your profession. Listen to podcasts from leaders in your space. To remain competitive, you must keep up with all the developments in your field and new trends that may impact your career. By constantly learning, you’ll be ahead of the crowd that chooses to remain static.

Talk To Your Boss

Arrange a meeting with your boss to discuss their plans for your future to ensure you are on the same page. Share with them your goals and all the steps you have taken to expand your knowledge, expertise and skill set to advance your position within the company.

Embrace Change

Always be vigilant of changes in the business landscape that can provide a path for future growth. As seen with the fast ascendancy of artificial intelligence, you can’t take anything for granted, as change is the new normal. Continually adjust your objectives to match new developments at work and in the marketplace. Consider how you can benefit from unique circumstances instead of resisting and ignoring your new reality.
