With 4 million Americans quitting their jobs and around 11 million positions available, the labor market has become the big topic of conversation. In the wake of the pandemic, people have assessed their views on work life. With so many opportunities available, people no longer need to settle for low-paying, dead-end jobs.
“In the last year, job openings soared and record levels of worker turnover shifted the balance of power to the worker, with a large swath of employees and job seekers fine-tuning a better work-life balance,” said job aggregator site Glassdoor.
To give a sense of the marketplace, Glassdoor has released its annual 50 Best Jobs in America report for 2022. The methodology behind the research included identifying specific jobs with the highest overall Glassdoor job score determined by “weighing three factors equally: earning potential (median annual base salary), overall job satisfaction rating and number of job openings. Results represent job titles that rate highly among all three categories.”
Daniel Zhao, a senior economist and data scientist at Glassdoor, said in a CNBC Make It interview, “Nowadays, every company is a tech company.” Zhao elaborated, “The pandemic has really emphasized the value of data because of how sharp and unpredictable the changes from this crisis have been—more companies are turning to real-time data to understand what’s going on and make decisions.”
The majority of top jobs are in technology, including enterprise architect, full-stack engineer, data scientist, devops engineer, machine-learning engineer, data engineer, software engineer, java developer, back-end engineer and cloud engineer.
Richard Johnson, Glassdoor associate economist, said in a statement, “Nearly half of the ‘Best Jobs’ are those in fast-growing technology roles, showcasing the high demand for technical skills and talent in the tech industry and beyond. These popular tech jobs will need to leverage both hard and soft skills to help businesses across industries navigate an increasingly digital world.”
Given how hot the job market is, corporate recruiter, HR manager and HR business partner made the list. During the early, dark days of the Covid-19 pandemic, thousands of human resources professionals and recruiters were furloughed or fired, as companies were massively laying off staff and enacting hiring freezes. Now, with the wide distribution of vaccines and opening up the economy, recruiters and HR professionals are in high demand.
In light of the health risks that people have endured and the toll it’s taken on the psyche, it’s no wonder that psychologists and physicians are represented in the listings. Although tech dominates, it takes other professionals to run, manage and oversee the companies that have been ramping up in a robust economy. This entails the need for product managers, sales and finance managers, attorneys, compliance officers and customer success professionals.
