Companies are chasing after experienced artificial intelligence tech professionals and offering high compensation packages to get the best talent in this space. AI job listings surged 42% compared to its low point in December 2022, the Wall Street Journal reported. Meanwhile, the tech market as a whole is trending downward with a continual flow of layoff announcements.

AI prompt engineering is quickly becoming a hot job with the ascendancy of this emerging technology. A prompt engineer designs and continually refines inputs on generative AI platforms, such as Gemini (formerly Bard), ChatGPT, Midjourney and DALLE-2, to gain optimal results. Salary ranges for prompt engineer job listings range from $200k to more than $300k.

Tech giant Salesforce’s focus on teaching prompt building shows that there is a fast-growing trend to make AI user friendly for nearly everyone. Within the context of the workplace, the technology aids in boosting productivity across business functions such as sales, customer service, marketing and commerce.

What Is Prompt Engineering?

Prompt engineering is an important part of guiding AI models, like Large Language Models, to produce desired outcomes based on specific inputs or requests. It’s the art of  crafting targeted questions or instructions that direct AI to find and share the top on-point responses in incredibly fast real-time conversations. These professionals facilitate effective communication between users and AI.

Prompt engineering is similar to teaching  something new to a person who doesn’t know much, if anything about a topic. The learning is accomplished via asking well-crafted questions designed to elicit the answers and explanations required to complete a task.  The engineer’s prompts guide AI models toward specific outputs by bridging human intent and machine responses. The process needs to also refine the queries and drill down with thoughtful inquiries and asks so that the end user gains a clear understanding of the topic and has the tools and knowledge to better do their jobs.

Opportunities And Challenges

Prompt engineering is a critical aspect of AI development. As AI models become more integrated into diverse applications, prompt engineers will play a key role in ensuring the accessibility and relevance of these models.

In layman terms,  prompt engineering serves as a conduit between human’s needs and the platform’s output, improving the quality of interactions. This cohort also needs to continue understanding the full potential of AI technologies and navigate the evolving landscape of AI effectively.

As AI models grow in complexity, crafting effective prompts becomes more challenging. Ensuring that prompts do not introduce biases into model outputs is crucial to growth. The sector presents challenges but also opportunities for innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration and the advancement of AI tools and solutions. Prompt engineering requires collaboration across disciplines like linguistics, psychology and computer science.

Creating New Lucrative Career Pathways

“As companies forge ahead with remarkable strides and substantial investments in groundbreaking AI tools, such as Copilots and Prompt Builders, they must simultaneously channel the same unwavering commitment into cultivating the skills of their IT teams,” said Jayesh Govindarajan, the senior vice president of AI at Salesforce. “This proactive approach entails meeting every admin and developer exactly where they are on their respective journeys and empowering them with the requisite knowledge and expertise to learn, adopt and effectively leverage AI across the entire landscape of their business.”

In February, Salesforce introduced Einstein 1 Studio, a set of low-code AI tools that enable the customization of AI actions, prompts and models, providing trusted responses grounded in a company’s unique data and metadata. The Studio includes Copilot Builder for creating custom AI actions, and new Trailhead AI courses have been launched to introduce career pathways and skills for over 6 million Trailblazers on Salesforce’s online learning platform, which can empower new AI technologists—like prompt engineers—to fill the labor market’s demand for these professionals.
